Shriner's
Winter Volksfest 2009
This 3rd Annual Show was held on Feb 1st at the Greensboro
Coliseum in Greensboro, NC. A packed house of 97 show cars and 30 vendors made
this show a success once again!
A wide
range of all types of VWs from All out show cars, street Driven, to Rat Rods,
Campers, Drag Cars and Dune Buggys. They were all there for one thing, to enjoy
a warm day Indoors with their Fellow VW Enthusiasts! Quite a few Type II's
present, with Jay Kinsey's 67 Deluxe taking the win in the stock class and Susan
Ireton's 71 Camper taking 2nd. Both of these Buses were in Immaculate shape and
well presented! Wesley Vestal brought out both of his Baywindow Buses and won
1st & 2nd with his two in the Modified class. The Karmann Ghia Class was well
represented with William Bottomley taking the win in the stock class with his
68, but the Modified Ghia Class had some competition! Tommy Davidson came out
with his freshly redone 65 Ghia Convertible, along with Charles Arthurs 72 Ghia
Convertible and quite a few more. All of which are well done and Beautiful Ghias,
but this go around Tommy came out with 1st with Charles taking 2nd place.
The Beetle Class
of course was HUGE! From Stock, to Modified, to Daily Driver, there were a bunch
of really NICE ones to take a look at! Bill Ridgeway's 63 Ragtop Beetle took 1st
in the 58-67 Stock class, you can always remember seeing his as it is the one on
the turntable at all the shows! In the Modified 58-67 we had some REALLY super
Nice Beetles, but in the end, only a couple of points separated 1st & 2nd place.
Phillip Sheek's new ride, a 61 Beetle riding on some Porsche Fuchs took 1st with
Phillip Penny's Gorgeous 66 Beetle with Mirror display at 2nd. This was Penny's
first show in over 10 years! He used to have this same Beetle out at many IVWA
events back in the 90's and decided to bring out once again in 2009! Welcome
Back Phillip! Take a look at the Winner's list for a complete list from the
event.
The swap meet section
was kicking with over 25 New and Used parts vendors. As you could see in person
or by the photos, it certainly was a busy place! We hope that you found what you
were looking for to help get you project finished by Spring time! Hope to see
more swap meeters for the 2010 event!
The 3 day Auto weekend
ended up giving over $12,000 to the Shriner's Hospital. We would like to Thank
everyone that attended and certainly hope you enjoyed yourselves! Thanks to the
following people for their assistance during showtime, Regina Mitchell, Jessie
Williams, Colby Oakes, Mark Alley, Jeff Colley, Anthony Del Vecchio, Francis
Drewry, Billy Dye, Tommy Davidson & Mickey Shaw. Will we be able to fill both
buildings for the 2010 year? We certainly hope so! The Hod Rod and Drag Racing
Expo has already sold out for their two days already! Date for the 2010 event
will be announced later in the year so stay tuned and hope to see you at one of
our other events!
